VISA ON ARRIVAL

Visa on Arrival at Bangkok Airport: Requirements, Process & How to Speed It Up

You’ve just landed at Suvarnabhumi after a 10-hour flight. You need a Visa on Arrival. The VOA counter has 80 people in front of you. The regular immigration queue behind it has 200 more.

This guide explains exactly how Visa on Arrival works at Bangkok Airport, what documents you need, how long it takes — and how to get through the entire process in under 15 minutes.

What Is Visa on Arrival in Thailand?

Visa on Arrival (VOA) is a short-stay visa issued at the airport upon arrival in Thailand. It is available to citizens of eligible countries who do not qualify for the standard 30–60 day visa exemption — or who need a longer confirmed stay than the exemption allows.

VOA is issued for 15 days and can be extended once at an immigration office for an additional 7 days (total: 22 days maximum).

⚠️ VOA is not the same as a tourist visa. A tourist visa (TR) must be obtained at a Thai embassy before travel and allows 60 days. VOA is applied for on arrival and allows 15 days.

Which Countries Are Eligible for Visa on Arrival?

As of 2026, VOA is available to citizens of 19 countries, including:

Region Eligible Countries
South Asia India, China (mainland), Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE
Central Asia Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan
East Asia Taiwan
Africa & Other Ethiopia, Fiji, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea

⚠️ Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, and most European passport holders qualify for a 30-day visa exemption — not VOA. You do not need to visit the VOA counter. Go directly to the regular immigration queue (or use Fast Track to skip it entirely).

VOA Requirements: What Documents You Need

Prepare these before joining the VOA queue — incomplete applications cause delays and send you to the back of the line:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date
  • Completed VOA application form (available at the counter or in the arrivals hall)
  • 1 recent passport photo (4×6 cm, white background — bring one, don’t rely on the airport printer)
  • Proof of accommodation — hotel booking confirmation with address
  • Return or onward flight ticket showing departure from Thailand
  • Proof of funds — 10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family (cash or bank statement)
  • VOA fee: ฿2,000 per person — cash only, Thai Baht preferred (some counters accept USD)

Where Is the VOA Counter at Bangkok Airport?

Suvarnabhumi (BKK)

The Visa on Arrival counter is located on Level 2 of the arrival terminal, before the main immigration hall. Look for the signs reading “Visa on Arrival” as you exit the jet bridge area and follow the corridor toward immigration. The VOA counter is on the left before the passport control booths.

Don Mueang (DMK)

The VOA counter at Don Mueang is located in the international arrivals hall on Level 1, immediately before the immigration counters. Follow the “Immigration” signs — the VOA desk is clearly marked on the right side before the main passport control rows.

How Long Does Visa on Arrival Take?

This is where most travellers are caught off guard. VOA processing involves two queues, not one:

  1. VOA application queue — submit your form, photo, and fee. This queue alone can take 30–90 minutes during peak hours.
  2. Regular immigration queue — after receiving your VOA stamp, you join the standard passport control line. Another 45–150 minutes during high season.

Total realistic time from plane to exit during peak season (November–April): 2–3 hours.

Off-Peak Season Peak Season (Nov–Apr)
VOA counter wait 15–30 minutes 45–90 minutes
Immigration queue after VOA 20–45 minutes 60–150 minutes
Total airport time ~1 hour 2–3 hours
With Fast Track assistance ~15 minutes ~15 minutes

How to Speed Up Visa on Arrival with Fast Track

FastTrack Bangkok provides a dedicated VOA assistance service. Here’s how it works:

  1. Your escort meets you at the gate with a name sign before you enter the terminal.
  2. They walk you directly to the VOA counter — to a dedicated window or priority position, bypassing the standard queue.
  3. Your escort assists with completing the application form and ensures your documents are in order before you reach the desk.
  4. After VOA stamp is issued, your escort immediately guides you to the priority immigration window — skipping the second queue entirely.
  5. Total time from gate to exit: approximately 12–15 minutes, including VOA processing.

💡 We also fill out and submit the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) on your behalf. Send us your passport copy, flight details, and hotel address via WhatsApp before your flight — we handle the rest.

Common VOA Mistakes to Avoid

Arriving without a passport photo

The VOA counter requires one passport photo. The airport has printing services, but the queue for them adds 20–30 minutes. Bring a printed photo from home.

Not having cash in Thai Baht

The VOA fee is ฿2,000 cash. Some counters accept USD, but exchange rates at airport counters are poor. Exchange money before joining the queue or at the airport exchange booth — not at the VOA window.

Missing accommodation proof

A hotel name is not enough. You need a booking confirmation with the full address. If staying with a friend, bring a letter of invitation with their Thai address.

Incomplete application form

The form asks for your Thai address (hotel), purpose of visit, and funds available. Fill it out completely before reaching the counter — blank fields send you to the back of the line.

Joining the wrong queue

VOA applicants must visit the VOA counter before the immigration hall. If you go straight to immigration without a VOA stamp, you’ll be redirected back — adding another 30–90 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get Visa on Arrival at Don Mueang as well as Suvarnabhumi?

Yes. VOA is available at both Bangkok international airports. The process and requirements are identical at both BKK and DMK.

Can I extend my Visa on Arrival in Thailand?

Yes — once, for 7 additional days, at any immigration office in Thailand. The extension fee is ฿1,900. This brings the maximum stay to 22 days total.

What if I’m refused a Visa on Arrival?

VOA can be refused if documents are incomplete, funds are insufficient, or the immigration officer has concerns about the purpose of visit. In case of refusal, you are held in a designated area and will be deported on the next available flight at your own expense. Ensure all documents are complete and funds are visible before approaching the counter.

Does Fast Track help with VOA refusals or complex immigration situations?

Our Fast Track service assists with the standard VOA process — form assistance, queue priority, and immigration lane access. For complex immigration situations, overstays, or prior entry refusals, the Green Channel service.

Do I need to fill out TDAC if I’m getting a VOA?

Yes. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is required for all foreign nationals entering Thailand, including VOA applicants. It must be submitted before arrival at tdac.immigration.go.th. If you book Fast Track with us, we complete and submit TDAC on your behalf.

How far in advance should I book Fast Track for a VOA arrival?

At least 24 hours before your flight. This allows us to coordinate your escort and pre-submit your TDAC. During peak season (November–March), 48–72 hours is recommended.
